Grace: Sober Judgment
How do I view myself? Some say, “Be a wounded soldier”. Others say, “Be a noble man.” Some say, “Be a strong man.” Others say, “Be kind and mind your own business.”
What does grace say? I’ve come to believe the only way to see myself properly and be the man God wants me to be is to view myself in light of the grace of God. Romans 12 teaches me to not think of myself more highly than I ought, but to use sober judgment. Based on the faith I have at this point, in light of God’s grace in Jesus, I am to take an honest assessment of myself.
Romans 12:1-3 ”1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. 3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.”
