Grace: 111 Verses

In the entire Bible (NIV84), the word grace appears in 93 verses in the literal form ” grace “. Adding in ” grace,” ” grace.” and ” grace?”, you get 111 verses.  If you count variations of the word, such as gracious or favor, then the count is higher.

As I strive to learn the grace of God, I’m not going to begin with quibbling about the exact count of the word. Nor am I going to strike up arguments about Bible translations. And I am also not going to define grace beforehand. My prayer is that the Bible text, as I have it (NIV84), may define the word grace. I pray that the Holy Spirit may guide my understanding and that I may temper that understanding against the backdrop of great theologians and thinkers from the past centuries.

Here is my count of the word grace in the NIV84. I used my own search software (VB 6.0) to search through my purchased copy of QuickVerse from Parson’s Software. I used the text string ” grace ” to do the search. (NOTE: I have now included the searches for ” grace,” ” grace.” and ” grace?” to get a more complete count). This ensures that only the word grace is counted. This means words like disgrace or gracious or graceful are excluded. Before I go on to more complicated matters, I pray to come to a solid understanding of pure grace, with hopes to go deeper into the fullness of grace.

The books of the Bible listed below have the word grace in them. Surprisingly (to me) Romans mentions the word grace the most. My blogging task for the next weeks and months is to visit the 111 verses about grace, starting with Romans:
